Charleston, WV – A wintry shift is on the way for West Virginia and surrounding areas as a cold “clipper” system moves in late Sunday, bringing rain that will quickly transition to snow and possible ice by Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Charleston.
Forecasters warn that temperatures may drop from above freezing to below freezing within hours, creating hazardous travel conditions and the potential for a flash freeze across much of the region. Snow accumulation and icy patches could make Monday’s morning commute treacherous, especially in higher elevations and untreated roads.
According to the NWS, most of Sunday will start as rain, but as cold air arrives overnight, precipitation will turn to snow by early Monday. Lows will fall into the 20s and low 30s, while highs Monday will remain near or below freezing.
After a brief dry period on Tuesday, another stronger system is expected by Wednesday, bringing widespread rain that could transition again to a wintry mix Wednesday night into Thursday. Light snow may continue through the end of the week as a secondary low pressure system passes south of the state.
Drivers are urged to use caution, prepare for rapidly changing road conditions, and monitor updated forecasts.
