Charles County, MD – A 13-year-old student at Mattawoman Middle School was hospitalized this week after reportedly using a vaping device containing THC, according to the Charles County Sheriff’s Office. The incident happened around 1:45 p.m. on November 7 when the student left school grounds and walked into the path of an oncoming pickup truck on Berry Road in Indian Head.
Authorities said the truck driver slowed in time to avoid serious injury, but the student was transported to a hospital as a precaution.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, a School Resource Officer (SRO) learned that the student had used the vape device during school hours and soon felt unwell. The vaping device was recovered and tested positive for THC. Investigators later determined that another student, age 14, had provided the vape. That student was charged as a juvenile on a civil citation for cannabis possession.
Officials are reminding parents to discuss the risks of vaping and using unknown substances with their children. Even small doses of THC or other chemicals can cause unpredictable and serious health effects, including dizziness, impaired judgment, and medical emergencies, deputies said.
