Authorities said the incident began around 11:55 p.m. on Sunday, September 22, when a man reported his car stolen from a gas station in the 11500 block of Berry Road. The victim told deputies he left his vehicle running while paying inside, and returned to find it missing.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, officers soon spotted the stolen vehicle about 30 minutes later in the 2000 block of Crain Highway. When deputies attempted to stop the driver, he allegedly fled and tried to evade officers. The pursuit ended on Jefferson Farm Road, where the suspect was taken into custody without further incident.
Investigators identified the suspect as Kingsley Ikechukweu Okafor, 30, of Lanham. He was arrested and charged with motor vehicle theft, driving under the influence, fleeing and eluding, and other traffic and criminal offenses.
Deputies also said two bulldogs were inside the vehicle at the time of the arrest. Both animals were secured by officers.
