Waldorf, MD – Two students were hospitalized after a school bus carrying members of the Westlake High School junior varsity football team was struck by a passenger car in Waldorf on Monday night.

According to the Charles County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred around 8:12 p.m. on September 29 in the 3700 block of Leonardtown Road. Investigators said a Chevrolet Camaro, traveling southbound, struck the rear of the school bus as it returned from a game at Thomas Stone High School.

Officials reported that 28 people were on the bus, including students, coaches, and staff. Two students were transported to the Charles Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. Others were evaluated at the scene by Fire/EMS.

Authorities identified the driver of the Camaro as David Wayne Coffren, 32, of Waldorf. Deputies said Coffren showed signs of impairment and was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol. A 7-year-old child, who was in Coffren’s vehicle and not secured in a booster seat, was released to a family member after the crash.

Coffren was arrested and charged with multiple offenses, including driving while impaired, driving while impaired with a minor, reckless driving, speeding, and failure to restrain a child in a car seat. He is currently being held at the Charles County Detention Center and is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, October 1.

Both the school bus and the Camaro sustained significant damage and were disabled in the crash. PFC Stine is leading the ongoing investigation.
