Waldorf, MD – A 51-year-old Waldorf man is facing serious charges after police say he intentionally struck another man with a vehicle early Wednesday morning, leaving the victim hospitalized with multiple injuries.
According to the Charles County Sheriff’s Office, officers were dispatched around 2:59 a.m. Wednesday to the 2600 block of Rooks Head Place in Waldorf following a report of a pedestrian struck by a car. When officers arrived, they found an adult male lying in a parking lot with significant injuries. He was transported to a hospital and remains in serious condition.
Investigators say preliminary findings indicate the victim had been arguing with the suspect when the suspect entered an SUV, drove toward the victim, and intentionally struck him. Police said the suspect fled the scene before officers arrived.
Following an investigation, detectives identified the suspect as James Calvin Smith, 51, of Waldorf, and obtained an arrest warrant. On Friday, December 20, Smith was located and taken into custody.
Smith has been charged with aggravated assault and multiple traffic-related violations, according to authorities. He is currently being held without bond at the Charles County Detention Center.
The incident occurred in a residential area of Waldorf in Charles County, part of the southern Maryland region near the Washington, D.C. metro area. Police have not released additional details about the argument that allegedly preceded the incident.
Authorities say the investigation remains active, and additional charges are possible.
Anyone with information related to the incident is encouraged to contact the Charles County Sheriff’s Office.
