Channahon, IL – The Channahon Fire Protection District announced the newest addition to its ranks — Firefighter/K9 Rigs, a comfort and emotional support dog now stationed with crews at Fire Station 1.

According to the department, Rigs has been training alongside firefighters while earning his AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy certification. Over the next year, the young dog will continue courses in emotional support and comfort work as he becomes a regular presence around the station.

Rigs is handled by Firefighter/Paramedic Shelby Fals, who manages his care and daily activities. Together, they participate in station routines, vehicle inspections, and community education. Fire officials said Rigs already has his own bed in the dormitory and enjoys spending time with the crews.

In addition to his emotional support role, Rigs will assist with public education visits and serve as a comfort K9 during community events. The department also thanked several local supporters, including Muttz Gym in Minooka for training help, Rusty Ridge Animal Hospital for health sponsorship, and Forepaws for donating food and toys.

Residents can expect to see Rigs at upcoming Fire District events, where he’ll join his handler in greeting the public and promoting wellness and fire safety.
