Channahon, IL – As residents turn their clocks back for Daylight Savings Time, the Channahon Fire Protection District is reminding the community to test smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms to ensure they’re working properly.

According to the department, alarms should be checked regularly and replaced every 10 years. Many newer models now include built-in 10-year batteries, but older alarms that rely on replaceable batteries should have them changed twice a year—using the time change as a reminder.

Officials also encourage residents to practice their home fire escape plan at least twice annually and to create one if they haven’t already. Printable templates and safety tips are available at www.channahonfire.com.

Fire officials add that those with hard-wired smoke alarms should check compatibility before replacing units, and that expired or malfunctioning detectors should be swapped immediately.

“Testing your alarms takes just a few minutes and can save your life,” the department emphasized in a social media post.
