Arizona residents, especially those in higher elevations, should brace for the season’s first snowfall starting Monday night. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an advisory, noting that a mix of rain and snow is expected to impact Flagstaff and nearby areas as temperatures drop sharply. This early snowfall could create slick road conditions, particularly on major routes like I-17 and I-40, making travel potentially hazardous.

According to the NWS, the snow will begin Monday evening, with the heaviest accumulation forecast overnight into Tuesday morning. Higher elevations around Flagstaff and along mountain routes could see an inch or more, while lower areas might experience light snow or rain showers. The arrival of this system, fueled by remnants of tropical storm Kristy merging with a cold front from Alaska, will bring a significant temperature drop, with daytime highs Tuesday only reaching the low 40s in Flagstaff.

As the week progresses, cold conditions will persist across Northern Arizona. Tuesday and Wednesday will remain chilly, with gusty southwest winds adding to the chill. Residents are advised to take precautions if traveling, as icy patches are likely in early morning hours, especially on shaded roadways and bridges.

Looking ahead, the NWS forecasts a gradual warming by Thursday, though temperatures are expected to stay below seasonal averages. Snow and early winter conditions signal a sharp change from the mild autumn weather seen in recent weeks. Motorists and residents should monitor weather updates and prepare for colder and potentially snowy conditions through midweek.
