Springfield, Illinois – Drivers and residents across central Illinois have limited time to prepare as fast-moving thunderstorms sweep through the region this afternoon, bringing the risk of damaging winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes before the evening commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, storms will continue to intensify through 5 p.m., moving بسرعة 50 to 60 mph, leaving little time to react once warnings are issued. Wind gusts could reach 60 to 75 mph, strong enough to down trees and power lines, while hail up to 2 inches in diameter may damage vehicles and roofs.

Cities including Peoria, Bloomington, Champaign, Decatur, and Springfield sit directly in the storm path, with heavy rainfall totals between 1 and 2 inches possible in stronger cells. Localized flooding on low-lying roads and poor drainage areas could develop quickly.

Officials warn that one or two tornadoes cannot be ruled out as storms strengthen. Residents are urged to stay weather aware, keep mobile alerts enabled, and be ready to seek shelter immediately if warnings are issued.

The severe threat will persist through the late afternoon, with conditions expected to evolve rapidly as storms push east. Additional warnings may be issued with little lead time.
