Champaign, IL – A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for much of Central Illinois until 6 a.m. Sunday, as heavy snow and strong winds continue to impact the region this evening. The National Weather Service in Lincoln issued the alert Saturday afternoon, warning residents in Piatt, Shelby, Champaign, Coles, Douglas, Edgar, Moultrie, and Vermilion counties to expect continued snow and hazardous travel conditions overnight.

According to the National Weather Service, an additional 1 to 3 inches of snow may accumulate through the night, with gusts reaching up to 35 mph. The combination of heavy snow and strong winds may lead to reduced visibility, slick roads, and isolated power outages due to snow-laden tree limbs.

Motorists are urged to use caution, especially on bridges and overpasses, which are expected to become icy. Officials recommend keeping an emergency kit — including a flashlight, food, and water — in vehicles in case of delays or road closures.
