Champaign, Ill. – Drivers across central Illinois should prepare for hazardous travel conditions Tuesday as strong thunderstorms threaten I-72 and surrounding highways. The storms may bring hail up to an inch in diameter, winds near 60 mph, and localized flooding that could make roads impassable. Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel and keep devices charged in case of power outages.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, scattered thunderstorms are expected to strengthen Tuesday morning and continue through Wednesday evening. Lightning and heavy downpours are the most immediate threats, especially in Champaign, Decatur, and Springfield. Spotter activation may be required for storm tracking if severe activity increases.
Storms will move east at around 25 mph, putting drivers on I-72, I-57, and I-55 at greatest risk for delays and dangerous conditions. The strongest cells may also down tree limbs and knock out power to rural communities. Flooding could become a concern in low-lying areas near the Sangamon River and local creeks.
After Wednesday, drier weather briefly returns, with cooler and more comfortable fall air settling in. Temperatures later this week are expected to remain in the 70s, before dipping into the 50s at night.
Residents should continue monitoring alerts, as additional watches or warnings may be issued if severe storms develop more widely.
