LINCOLN, IL – Wind howls across central Illinois this morning, rattling windows and scattering snow crusts from the night before. Drivers heading toward Champaign, Bloomington, or Springfield face strong crosswinds and slick stretches on I-55 and I-74 as early holiday travelers wrap up their Thanksgiving returns.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, a Special Weather Statement remains in effect with gusts up to 45 mph and falling temperatures near 28°F. Visibility may dip sharply at times as loose snow lifts off open fields. Tree limbs could snap, and minor power outages remain possible through midmorning. Officials urge caution, especially for high-profile vehicles and commuters on west-east routes.
By Monday, the next system brings accumulating snow and wind, with 1–3 inches expected in portions of Champaign, Danville, and Bloomington. Conditions could deteriorate quickly Monday afternoon as temperatures dip near freezing, creating black ice by evening. Snow will taper late Monday night, but slick conditions will linger into Tuesday morning.
After Tuesday, colder and calmer weather takes hold. Highs will remain near or below 30°F through midweek, with brisk northwest winds continuing the chill. Late-week models hint at another system tracking across the Midwest, possibly bringing light snow to Illinois by Friday night.
