CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – A quiet stretch of fall warmth will soon give way to a stormy weekend across central Illinois. After a sunny Friday, showers and thunderstorms are expected to arrive late Saturday, bringing locally heavy rainfall and breezy conditions to the I-57 and I-74 corridors.

The National Weather Service in Lincoln reports that Friday will be the final calm day before an active system moves in. Highs will climb into the upper 70s under partly cloudy skies, making for great weather to finish outdoor chores or enjoy early fall festivals. However, residents should plan ahead for changing conditions Saturday afternoon.

A strong cold front will push through the region late Saturday, triggering widespread showers and a few thunderstorms. Winds will gust up to 25 mph at times, especially during the evening. While severe weather is not expected, heavy downpours may cause ponding on roadways and reduced visibility for drivers across Champaign, Urbana, and surrounding towns. Rainfall totals may reach up to one inch in some areas.

By Sunday, the front will exit, bringing cooler, breezy air and clearing skies. Highs will drop into the low 60s, setting up a crisp and sunny finish to the weekend—ideal for pumpkin patch visits, football tailgates, and backyard cleanup.

Next week will start dry and mild before another round of light rain returns Tuesday.
