Champaign, Illinois – Scorching heat and a chance of severe storms will make Monday, July 28th a dangerous day for much of central Illinois.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, heat index values could soar as high as 109°F Monday afternoon across Champaign and surrounding counties, with isolated thunderstorms possible late in the day. A Heat Advisory remains in effect through 7 p.m. Sunday, and dangerously hot conditions will continue through at least Tuesday, especially along and south of I-72.
Storms could bring damaging wind gusts and heavy rainfall, particularly Sunday night into early Monday. Drivers should remain alert on I-72 and area roads, especially during peak heat hours and in the event of sudden downpours. Locals are advised to stay indoors during the hottest part of the day, hydrate frequently, and check on vulnerable individuals without air conditioning.
By Monday night, conditions stay humid with partly cloudy skies and a low near 76°F. The heat returns Tuesday with highs near 94°F and minimal breeze, pushing the heat index back over 105°F.
