Champaign, Ill. – Thunderstorms will move into Champaign and much of central Illinois tonight as a cold front sweeps across the region, bringing gusty winds and a sharp cool down by Thursday. Storms could produce strong wind gusts and periods of heavy rain, especially along and east of I-55.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, storms are most likely from late afternoon into tonight, with rain chances reaching 80% in some areas east of I-55. Temperatures will fall into the 50s overnight before drier air settles in. Clouds will break Thursday with highs holding in the low 70s, nearly 10 degrees cooler than today.

Drivers on I-72 and I-57 should use caution this evening as heavy rain could reduce visibility and winds may make travel difficult, particularly for high-profile vehicles. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items ahead of storms.

After the front passes, Champaign will see calmer conditions with partly to mostly sunny skies through the weekend. Another chance of showers returns Friday night, mainly south of I-72, but most of central Illinois should remain dry.

Warnings for tonight’s storms remain in place, with improving conditions expected by Thursday morning.
