Champaign, Ill. – Central Illinois is heating up as a stretch of hot, dry weather takes hold through the weekend, with highs expected to peak at 95 degrees Sunday. The National Weather Service warns that little relief is on the way, as warm nights in the mid-60s will keep conditions uncomfortable for residents.

According to the National Weather Service office in Lincoln, Friday will reach 89 degrees under sunny skies, with temperatures steadily climbing into the low to mid-90s through early next week. Saturday will bring a high near 90 before Sunday’s peak heat sets in, making outdoor events and travel more taxing.

Champaign County, along with nearby cities including Urbana, Decatur, and Danville, will see mostly clear skies at night, though overnight lows only dip into the mid-to-upper 60s. The stretch of warm nights will limit cooling, especially in urban areas, putting added stress on residents without reliable air conditioning.

Officials recommend staying hydrated, avoiding strenuous outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, and checking on vulnerable neighbors and pets as the heat wave continues.

The heat is expected to last into at least Wednesday, with highs remaining in the low 90s before slight relief late week.
