Champaign, Ill. – Central Illinois is bracing for dangerous heat through the weekend, with temperatures soaring into the upper 90s and heat index values reaching between 100 and 110 degrees. The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory, warning residents of dangerous conditions through at least Sunday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, a hot and humid air mass will remain over the region with Saturday and Sunday seeing the most extreme conditions. Daytime highs will reach 96 to 97 degrees, but oppressive humidity will make it feel much hotter. Heat will linger into Monday and Tuesday, keeping central Illinois in the danger zone into early next week.
In Champaign and surrounding counties, overnight lows will offer little relief, holding in the low to mid-70s. Health officials urge residents to limit outdoor activity, drink plenty of water, and check on elderly neighbors or those without air conditioning. Cooling centers may be available locally for residents seeking relief.
By Tuesday and Wednesday, a 30% chance of thunderstorms could break the heat slightly, though forecasters say it is too early to determine whether storms will turn severe.
The National Weather Service cautions that advisories may be extended if heat persists or storms become more organized.
