Springfield, Illinois – Bitterly cold conditions will persist across central Illinois through Sunday morning, with single-digit and subzero temperatures combined with dangerously low wind chills before a gradual warmup arrives next week.

According to the National Weather Service in Central Illinois, overnight low temperatures will remain in the single digits or below zero through Sunday morning. Wind chill values are expected to drop as low as 15 degrees below zero in some locations, especially during the overnight and early morning hours.

Forecast wind chill data shows the coldest conditions impacting communities along and near Interstate 72, Interstate 55, Interstate 57, and Interstate 74, including Springfield, Decatur, Champaign, Bloomington, and Peoria. While skies may remain mostly dry, the extreme cold alone poses a serious safety concern.

The National Weather Service emphasizes that prolonged exposure to these temperatures can lead to frostbite and hypothermia, even without snowfall or wind-driven precipitation. Residents are urged to dress in layers, cover all exposed skin, and limit time outdoors, especially during the coldest overnight periods.

Cold weather precautions extend beyond personal safety. Officials recommend keeping vehicles winter-ready by maintaining proper tire pressure, ensuring fuel tanks remain at least half full, and carrying emergency supplies such as blankets and safety kits. At home, residents should slowly drip faucets, monitor heating systems, and use space heaters with caution to prevent fire hazards.

Despite the harsh conditions, forecasters say a warming trend is expected next week, with temperatures gradually moderating beginning Monday. Highs are forecast to climb back into the teens and 20s, eventually reaching more seasonable levels by midweek.

Students, early-morning workers, and weekend travelers across central Illinois should plan for extreme cold conditions through Sunday morning and remain alert to updated forecasts.

While winter’s grip remains firm for now, officials note that relief from the bitter cold is on the horizon as February begins.
