Champaign, IL – Central Illinois residents are being advised to prepare for significant weekend rainfall that could both ease drought conditions and cause temporary flooding in some areas. The National Weather Service in Lincoln reports that chances for over one inch of rain are 50 to 70 percent east of the Illinois River, with localized totals possibly exceeding three inches.
According to the National Weather Service, showers will begin early Saturday morning in western Illinois and spread eastward through the day. The heaviest rainfall is expected Saturday afternoon and evening, tapering off by Sunday morning across east-central Illinois.
While the precipitation will be beneficial for ongoing dry conditions, forecasters caution that heavier thunderstorms could lead to minor urban flooding, especially where storm drains are blocked by fallen leaves.
Rain coverage will be widespread, with higher chances across cities including Champaign, Danville, Bloomington, and Decatur. Motorists are urged to use caution during heavy downpours and avoid water-covered roads.
