Champaign, IL – Central Illinois is experiencing strong winds and an increased fire risk today, prompting warnings from the National Weather Service. Gusts up to 50 mph are expected through Friday afternoon, creating hazardous conditions for drivers, especially along I-74 near Champaign. Additionally, dry air and strong winds elevate the risk of wildfires across the region.
According to the National Weather Service, a Wind Advisory remains in effect from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. CST for portions of central and east-central Illinois. Southwest winds between 20 to 30 mph, with peak gusts reaching 50 mph, could cause travel disruptions and scattered power outages. High-profile vehicles are particularly at risk of difficulty controlling movement.
A Special Weather Statement has also been issued due to increased fire danger. The combination of low humidity, gusty winds, and dry ground conditions makes burning unsafe. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, properly dispose of cigarettes, and secure loose objects that could be blown away.
Looking ahead, Saturday will bring calmer winds and mostly sunny conditions, with a high near 36°F. Sunday will remain clear, with temperatures reaching 41°F. However, by Monday, rain and snow could mix in before clearing by the afternoon.
Drivers should remain cautious on open roads, and residents should take precautions against fire hazards. Stay updated with local alerts and prepare for shifting conditions as the weekend progresses.
