Champaign Gunfire Incident Leaves Indiana Man Critically Wounded

Champaign, IL – Champaign Police responded to a reported shooting on January 7, 2024, at 1:07 p.m. in the 900 block of S. Mattis Avenue, resulting in a 27-year-old man from Gary, Indiana, suffering from severe gunshot wounds. 

According to the Champaign Police Department, the victim arrived at a local hospital through personal transport and is currently in critical condition. No other injuries have been reported in this incident.

The initial investigation revealed that the victim was outside near an apartment building when an unidentified individual approached, leading to an altercation. The suspect fired multiple shots at the victim before fleeing on foot. The police are actively searching for the suspect and have not made any arrests. Officers are canvassing the area for witnesses and surveillance footage that may aid the investigation.
