Champaign, IL – A residential fire on Wednesday afternoon displaced a family and their pets in Champaign’s 600 block of English Creek Court. Firefighters arrived at 2:34 p.m. and quickly brought the fire under control.

According to the Champaign Fire Department, light smoke was visible from the duplex’s front door when crews arrived. The residents had already evacuated safely. Firefighters deployed a single hose to extinguish the flames inside the home.

Investigators determined the fire was accidental and caused by cooking. One resident was treated on scene and transported to a local hospital for further care. Two dogs and one cat were rescued from the home.

No firefighters were injured during the response. Officials emphasized the importance of working smoke alarms and practicing evacuation plans.

Residents are reminded to remain low to the ground if smoke fills a home and to close doors behind them to slow the spread of fire.
