Urbana, IL – A 17-year-old Urbana High School student was arrested Wednesday evening after allegedly threatening to carry out a school shooting, according to the Urbana Police Department.
The incident reportedly began with a confrontation between students on September 17 around 7:30 p.m. Police said the teen made comments about shooting up the school, which were overheard by staff and quickly reported to authorities.
According to Urbana Police, officers located the student soon after the report. With permission from the juvenile’s guardian, investigators searched the student’s home but found no weapons. Officials emphasized that the threat was made off school grounds and there was no evidence of firearms being brought onto campus.
Throughout the investigation, Urbana Police worked alongside Urbana School District staff to ensure student and staff safety. The department stressed that all threats to school safety are taken seriously and that measures remain in place to maintain a safe learning environment.
The 17-year-old has been taken into custody in connection with the alleged threat. Due to the individual’s age, police have not released further identifying details.
