Champaign, Ill. – Dangerously hot and humid weather will grip Champaign and much of central Illinois through Tuesday, with heat index values soaring between 100°F and 115°F.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, the heat wave will peak Monday and Tuesday, with actual highs reaching 95°F in some areas. Isolated afternoon thunderstorms are possible, but the main concern is prolonged exposure to high heat and humidity, which can be dangerous without proper precautions.
Cities across Central Illinois, including Decatur, Springfield, and Bloomington, are under advisories urging residents to limit outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours. Cooling centers in Champaign and Urbana are open, and health officials recommend staying hydrated, avoiding strenuous activity, and checking on vulnerable neighbors and pets.
Relief arrives midweek as a cold front moves into the region late Wednesday into Thursday. Rain chances increase, and highs will drop to the upper 70s and low 80s — a welcome shift after several sweltering days. Thursday’s mix of sun and storms marks the start of a cooler pattern expected to persist into the weekend.
Heat advisories remain in effect through Tuesday evening, and updates will follow as the cold front approaches.
