Riverton, WY – Wyoming wakes to calm skies early Sunday, but forecasters warn that quiet won’t last. Strong winds and mountain snow are moving in from the west, bringing a sharp reminder that winter is closing in on the Cowboy State.

According to the National Weather Service in Riverton, a High Wind Warning remains in effect through Sunday night for Natrona, southern Lincoln, and southeastern Fremont Counties. Gusts may reach 55 mph across exposed ridges and open highways, especially along I-80 and U.S. 287. Drivers pulling trailers or high-profile vehicles should delay travel or use extra caution as crosswinds strengthen through the afternoon.

A Winter Weather Advisory also covers the Teton and Absaroka Mountains, where snow is expected from Sunday afternoon through Monday morning. Accumulations could make mountain passes slick and visibility poor at times. Strong westerly winds will add to blowing snow concerns above 8,000 feet.

Temperatures in central Wyoming will drop from near 70°F Sunday to the mid-50s by Monday, with a crisp chill settling in by Tuesday morning. Clear skies return midweek, but the air will stay cool — highs near 58°F and lows dipping into the 20s.

For now, it’s a classic Wyoming pattern: warm sun, roaring wind, and snow sweeping in from the high country — a preview of the long winter ahead.
