La Crosse, WI — A volatile weather system moving through central Wisconsin is expected to create hazardous travel conditions and power outage risks through 6 a.m. Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, a rain/snow mix with embedded thunderstorms and small hail is pushing through the region, with freezing rain and icing occurring in areas where temperatures fall below 32°F. The heaviest impacts are being reported along a corridor stretching from Eau Claire to the Wisconsin Dells.
Rainfall rates of up to 0.40 inches per hour are forecast, contributing to slick roads, potential slide-offs, and downed power lines. Gusty winds may accompany stronger storms, especially near the southern portions of the system closer to Waterloo and Mason City, IA.
Elevated surfaces such as bridges and overpasses are particularly susceptible to icing, prompting alerts for drivers to delay or alter travel plans until conditions improve after sunrise.
Officials urge residents to monitor road conditions at 511wi.gov and prepare for possible outages. Snowfall accumulation remains minor but combined with hail and freezing rain, it poses a risk for tree damage and infrastructure strain. Central Wisconsin residents are advised to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary travel until the system clears later Sunday morning.
