Wausau, WI – A significant ice storm is forecast to impact central and northern Wisconsin through Sunday, with ice accumulations reaching up to 0.75 inches in some areas.
According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, freezing rain is expected to begin Saturday evening and continue into Sunday across Taylor, Clark, and Marathon counties. The heaviest ice is forecast for areas around Wausau and Medford, where hazardous road conditions, tree damage, and power outages are likely.
Ice accumulation between 0.10 to 0.75 inches could down tree limbs and power lines, especially in elevated terrain. Farther south, areas near La Crosse and Prairie du Chien may experience a light glaze on elevated surfaces, depending on overnight temperatures.
Periods of rain and embedded thunderstorms are expected to continue through Saturday night, transitioning to freezing rain and a wintry mix north of I-94. By Sunday night, precipitation will likely shift to light snow as colder air moves in.
Travelers are urged to delay non-essential travel, monitor local forecasts, and prepare for possible outages. Residents should charge devices, avoid parking under trees, and keep extra blankets and emergency kits on hand.
