Syracuse, NY – Lake-effect snow will continue to impact portions of central and western New York through 10 a.m. Tuesday, creating slippery roads, reduced visibility, and difficult travel during both the evening and Tuesday morning commutes, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
According to the NWS Binghamton and NWS Buffalo offices, multiple lake-effect bands are expected to intensify at times tonight, bringing additional snow across five central New York counties—Onondaga, Southern Cayuga, Madison, Cortland, and Chenango—as well as Wayne and Northern Cayuga counties along the Lake Ontario shoreline.
Across the Binghamton coverage area, forecasters expect 2 to 6 inches of new accumulation by Tuesday morning, with the highest totals focused on central Onondaga County and western Madison County. Meanwhile, the Buffalo office reports 3 to 6 inches possible across far eastern Wayne and northern Cayuga counties, where winds gusting up to 35 mph may cause pockets of blowing snow in open areas.
Both advisories warn that road conditions may vary significantly over short distances, a hallmark of lake-effect snow. Drivers may encounter sudden transitions from clear pavement to near-whiteout conditions within a few miles.
The advisories remain in effect until 10 a.m. Tuesday, covering most of the morning commute. Forecasters urge drivers to slow down, allow extra time, and be prepared for rapidly changing visibility.
Residents can check statewide road conditions by calling 511, and officials ask travelers to report local snowfall totals through the NWS website or social media.
