LEAVENWORTH, Wash. – A strong early-season storm is bringing the first significant mountain snow of fall to the central Cascades, with several inches expected through Monday morning. The National Weather Service in Spokane has continued its Winter Weather Advisory from 8 a.m. Sunday through 11 a.m. Monday for elevations above 3,000 feet in central and western Chelan County, including Stevens Pass, Blewett Pass, and Holden Village.
According to the NWS Spokane office, snow totals will range from 2 to 6 inches between 3,000 and 4,000 feet, with 6 to 12 inches possible above 4,000 feet. Localized areas such as Mission Ridge could see as much as 18 inches. Light to moderate snow will continue into the overnight hours, creating slick and snow-covered roads on mountain routes.
Travelers should prepare for winter-like driving conditions across U.S. 2 and U.S. 97. The Washington State Department of Transportation advises motorists to slow down, keep headlights on, and allow extra time for travel through the Cascades. Winds in higher elevations will produce wind chills in the teens, posing additional risks for outdoor workers and hikers.
Drivers are urged to check WSDOT’s online travel map before heading into the mountains and to carry emergency supplies such as food, water, and blankets. Officials also recommend postponing backcountry trips until the weather stabilizes Monday afternoon.
Conditions will begin improving late Monday morning as snow showers taper and temperatures gradually moderate.
