Ellensburg, Washington – A fast-moving system will bring snow and pockets of freezing rain to the eastern slopes of the Washington Cascades Tuesday, creating slick roads from Ellensburg to Cle Elum and over higher terrain near Roslyn, Easton, and Cliffdell. Even light icing could turn bridges hazardous as conditions deteriorate Tuesday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service Pendleton office, a Winter Weather Advisory covers the Upper and Lower Slopes of the Eastern Washington Cascades Crest and the Kittitas Valley from 10 a.m. Tuesday through 4 a.m. Wednesday. According to meteorologists, the upper slopes could see 5 to 10 inches of snow, while lower slopes expect 3 to 7 inches. Ellensburg and Thorp may pick up up to 2 inches, but icing remains the key concern across the valley. A light glaze will develop where shallow cold air holds in place.
Road conditions will worsen as snow begins late morning, then transitions to mixed precipitation during the afternoon. According to WSDOT, drivers on I-90, especially near Snoqualmie Pass and the Roslyn–Cle Elum stretch, should prepare for abrupt changes in traction. Elevated ramps and shaded canyons will ice fastest.
Residents should avoid non-essential travel and keep emergency kits in vehicles, including water, blankets, and a flashlight. Charge phones before heading out. Slow down on curves, maintain long following distance, and avoid sudden braking. Outdoor activities and school events may see delays if surfaces glaze early Tuesday evening.
