Leavenworth, Wash. – Residents across Central and Eastern Washington face a critical fire weather threat this Sunday, as high winds and dry air combine to create conditions ripe for rapid fire spread from the Methow Valley to Leavenworth and the Waterville Plateau.

According to the National Weather Service in Spokane, a Fire Weather Watch goes into effect Sunday afternoon through Sunday evening for Methow Valley, the Central Cascades, and Waterville Plateau. Gusty westerly winds of 15 to 20 mph—peaking up to 30 mph—will coincide with relative humidity dropping as low as 15% in the valleys and up to 25% near river corridors and foothills. These conditions are most dangerous between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Communities in Leavenworth, Ardenvoir, Chelan, Twisp, and Waterville are urged to avoid all outdoor burning, secure spark-causing equipment, and remain alert for rapidly changing fire conditions. Roads such as US-2, Highway 97, and local access to the Cascades could be impacted if new fires start.

The National Weather Service warns that any spark could turn into a fast-moving wildfire under these conditions. Residents should keep cell phones charged, review evacuation routes, and stay tuned for possible Red Flag Warnings.

The fire danger is expected to ease after 9 p.m. Sunday, but elevated risk may persist if dry, windy weather continues into next week.
