Wenatchee, WA – Residents across Chelan and Douglas counties are breathing smoky air Sunday as wildfire haze continues to blanket Central Washington, prompting a health alert that remains in effect until further notice.

According to the Washington Department of Ecology, air quality levels in Wenatchee, East Wenatchee, Leavenworth, Chelan, and surrounding communities are measuring at “unhealthy” levels due to elevated fine particulate matter (PM2.5). Officials warn the smoke may linger through the weekend as regional wildfires continue to burn.

The alert means sensitive groups, including children, older adults, and those with heart or lung conditions, should stay indoors and avoid strenuous activity. The agency also recommends keeping windows closed, running air purifiers if available, and limiting travel on smoky roads where visibility may be reduced.

Health officials emphasize that poor air quality affects everyone, not just vulnerable populations. Outdoor workers and athletes are at increased risk of respiratory irritation and should take extra precautions.

The Department of Ecology will continue monitoring conditions, with advisories likely extended into early next week if smoke persists.
