Wakefield, VA – Residents across much of Virginia are bracing for strong to severe thunderstorms expected to roll through the state between 4 p.m. and midnight tonight. These storms carry a significant threat of damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph and large hail.
According to the National Weather Service Wakefield VA, an Enhanced Risk (Level 3/5) for severe weather is in effect for the northern part of the area, including Richmond and surrounding counties. Further south, a Slight Risk (Level 2/5) covers the remainder of southeast Virginia, stretching down to the North Carolina border. Isolated tornadoes cannot be ruled out, though the primary threats remain damaging winds and hail.
Before the storms arrive, much of the region will experience another hot day, with high temperatures in the lower to mid-90s. Heat indices are expected to approach 100 degrees Fahrenheit, particularly in cities like Richmond, Petersburg, and Norfolk. Residents should stay hydrated if spending time outdoors.
Once the cold front approaches this afternoon, the storm threat will escalate. Communities in the Enhanced Risk zone, including Louisa, Richmond, and Tappahannock, should prepare for more widespread and persistent storms. In cities like Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and Elizabeth City, while the threat is slightly lower, residents should still be vigilant for isolated intense storms. Secure any loose outdoor items and be prepared for potential power outages.
The severe weather potential will continue through midnight. Residents are encouraged to monitor local weather alerts and have multiple ways to receive warnings throughout the evening.
