Richmond, VA – A dangerous combination of extreme heat and severe thunderstorms is expected to sweep through central and eastern Virginia between 3 and 10 p.m. Friday, triggering flood watches, storm warnings, and serious public safety concerns.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, heat index values could reach 105–107° in northeast North Carolina and near 100° across much of Virginia. A Heat Advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m. Meanwhile, a Flood Watch covers areas south of I-64, where 2 to 4 inches of rain may fall in under two hours, especially in locations already saturated from earlier storms.
Cities including Richmond, Williamsburg, Emporia, and Roanoke Rapids face the highest risk for damaging wind gusts over 60 mph, flash flooding, and isolated power outages. Low-lying roads near creeks and drainage basins could become impassable by evening. The worst of the storm activity is expected between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m., moving northwest to southeast at 20 mph.
Residents should avoid non-essential travel, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable neighbors. If driving, never cross flooded roads and monitor alerts closely.
Storms may continue into early Saturday. Additional warnings are possible late tonight.
