Richmond, Virginia – Strong thunderstorms could rapidly develop across central and northern Virginia by 4 p.m. today, bringing wind gusts up to 70 mph that may down trees and disrupt evening travel.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, isolated to scattered storms are expected mainly north of the I-64 corridor, including Richmond, Fredericksburg, and areas along I-95. The main window for severe weather runs from 4 p.m. through 2 a.m., with storms moving at 40 to 50 mph.
Damaging wind gusts are the primary concern, with isolated large hail also possible in stronger cells. While tornado risk remains low, the fast-moving nature of storms could lead to sudden impacts, including debris on roadways and brief power outages.
Drivers along I-95, I-64, and Route 1 should be prepared for rapidly changing conditions during the evening commute, including reduced visibility and slick roads under heavy downpours.
Temperatures will climb into the mid to upper 80s ahead of the storms, adding instability to the atmosphere. Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items and monitor alerts as storms develop this afternoon.
