Blacksburg, Va. – Scattered heavy storms could drench much of Virginia through Sunday, with 1 to 2 inches of rain expected and flash flooding likely in low-lying or urban areas.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, high moisture content and warm daytime temperatures will fuel slow-moving thunderstorms across central and southwestern Virginia. The heaviest downpours may drop more than 2 inches of rain in localized spots, particularly along the Blue Ridge and New River valleys.
Flood-prone areas such as Roanoke, Blacksburg, and Lynchburg face increased risk through the weekend. Communities along Route 460 and I-81 should monitor conditions closely as saturated ground may lead to rapid runoff. Smaller creeks and streams could overflow with little warning.
Residents are urged to avoid flooded roadways, check local alerts frequently, and secure outdoor belongings. With this unsettled pattern lingering into early next week, local emergency officials recommend preparing for intermittent power outages and travel delays.
Flood watches may be upgraded as storms develop. Stay weather-aware as new advisories are likely through the weekend.
