Louisa, Virginia – Temperatures will drop to near-freezing within hours overnight, putting crops, gardens, and outdoor plumbing at risk across central Virginia before sunrise Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, a Freeze Warning remains in effect from 2 a.m. through 9 a.m. Thursday for Fluvanna County and both eastern and western Louisa County. Overnight lows are expected to fall to around 31 degrees, cold enough to cause widespread frost formation.
The timing targets the early morning hours, when calm winds and clear skies will allow temperatures to dip quickly. Areas across Louisa, Mineral, and Palmyra could see the most significant impacts, especially in low-lying and rural locations where colder air settles.
Sensitive vegetation, including early spring crops, flowers, and garden plants, could be damaged or killed if left unprotected. Outdoor plumbing and irrigation systems may also be vulnerable to freezing conditions.
Residents are urged to cover or bring in plants, disconnect hoses, and take precautions before midnight. The freeze threat will ease after sunrise Thursday, but additional cold alerts could follow if conditions persist.
