Blacksburg, Va. – Drivers across southwest Virginia could face stormy conditions Thursday evening as strong thunderstorms push into the region. Wind gusts may bring down trees and power lines, creating dangerous travel conditions on I-81 and surrounding roadways. Residents should secure outdoor items and prepare for possible power outages.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, scattered thunderstorms will develop late Thursday afternoon and intensify into the night. Some storms may produce damaging wind gusts capable of toppling branches and disrupting utilities. Heavy rain could also reduce visibility for commuters heading home.

The risk of severe weather lessens by Friday as drier air moves in, leaving much of the day sunny with highs in the low 80s. However, the break will be short-lived. On Saturday, another round of storms could develop, with showers and thunderstorms expected during the afternoon and evening. Outdoor events and early fall football games could be impacted if storms intensify.

By Sunday, conditions improve again with partly sunny skies and highs near 80. Early next week looks seasonable, with daytime highs in the 70s and overnight lows dipping into the 50s, offering a crisp fall feel.

Stay weather-aware through Thursday night, and monitor for additional alerts if storms strengthen.
