MONTPELIER, Vt. – A crisp autumn night will bring the season’s first widespread frost to much of central and eastern Vermont overnight tonight, as temperatures dip to near freezing. The National Weather Service in Burlington has issued a Frost Advisory from midnight tonight through 8 a.m. Saturday for Lamoille, Washington, Orange, and Windsor counties, including Montpelier, Stowe, Randolph, and White River Junction.

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures as low as 32 degrees will lead to frost formation in sheltered valleys and open fields. Residents are urged to protect tender outdoor plants, cover gardens, and bring in potted vegetation to prevent damage.

Clear skies and calm winds will combine to allow rapid cooling overnight. According to NWS Burlington meteorologist Boyd, the frost will be most widespread across rural areas away from city centers and higher elevations. Farms and local gardens may see minor crop loss if unprotected.

Drivers could encounter frosted windshields early Saturday, especially in shaded or low-lying areas along I-89, U.S. Route 2, and VT Route 100. The Vermont Agency of Transportation recommends extra time for morning commutes and caution on bridges and overpasses that may cool faster than road surfaces.

Temperatures will rebound into the 50s under sunshine Saturday afternoon, with milder conditions expected through Sunday and early next week.
