Chicago, IL — A powerful Arctic air mass will bring record-breaking cold and heavy snowfall to the Central U.S. this week, stretching from the Plains to the Mid-Atlantic, according to the National Weather Service.

The NOAA Weather Prediction Center reported that from Tuesday through Friday, temperatures could plunge as low as -60°F with wind chills across the northern Plains. Sub-zero conditions may reach as far south as Texas, Arkansas, and Tennessee. Forecasters warned that frostbite could occur within minutes in these extreme temperatures.

Significant snowfall is expected from the central Plains through the Ohio Valley, with some areas bracing for over 8 inches by Wednesday night. Major cities, including Chicago, St. Louis, and Indianapolis, may experience travel disruptions due to snow and ice accumulation.

Residents are advised to limit outdoor exposure, dress in layers, and monitor weather updates. The storm could cause hazardous road conditions and power outages, making early preparations essential. The National Weather Service urges travelers to check for road closures and flight delays throughout the week.
