Waco, Texas – Central Texas is bracing for dangerous travel and widespread power disruptions as a powerful winter storm moves in early Saturday, coating major highways in a thick layer of ice and sleet.

According to the National Weather Service in Fort Worth, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 6 a.m. Saturday through noon Sunday. The region could see up to ¾ inch of ice, with localized snow and sleet totals near 1 inch, creating treacherous conditions on roads and increasing the risk of downed power lines and tree damage.

Cities under the warning include Waco, Killeen, Temple, Corsicana, Athens, and Palestine, with major highways at risk including I-35, I-14, TX-6, TX-31, and US-84. Authorities warn that travel could be impossible at times, especially during the peak of the storm Saturday night into early Sunday.

Residents are urged to avoid all non-essential travel, stock up on supplies, and prepare for potential power outages that could last beyond the storm’s end. Wind gusts will exacerbate ice damage to trees and utility lines.

More updates are expected as the system tracks across the region Saturday. Localized alerts may follow depending on shifting ice bands.
