Austin, Texas – Locally heavy rainfall is drenching Central Texas today, putting drivers in Austin and nearby cities on alert for dangerous flash flooding and rapidly rising rivers through this evening.
According to the National Weather Service, a Flood Watch remains in effect for Travis, Williamson, Llano, Kerr, Uvalde, Val Verde, and ten additional counties until 9 p.m. Monday. Rainfall totals could reach 1 to 2 inches, with isolated downpours dropping as much as 5 inches, especially across the Hill Country and areas west of I-35.
Low-water crossings in Austin, Bandera, and Fredericksburg could quickly become impassable as creeks and streams respond to sudden, intense rainfall. Emergency officials urge residents in flood-prone areas—including the Blanco and Guadalupe River basins—to move vehicles to higher ground and avoid travel on rural roads after dark. In Uvalde and Del Rio, swollen rivers and saturated ground heighten the risk for flash flooding and road closures. Power outages and delays to area schools are possible if flooding intensifies.
Residents should have a weather radio ready, keep phones charged, and never attempt to drive across flooded roadways. This round of storms comes as many area rivers are already running high, echoing severe July flooding events from 2021.
The Flood Watch remains in effect until this evening, and additional warnings may be issued if rainfall persists.
