Amarillo, Texas – Thunderstorms are moving across the central Texas Panhandle Wednesday afternoon, bringing heavy rain, lightning, and strong winds that could make travel difficult on key roadways.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, storms began developing shortly after 1 p.m. along a boundary stretching from Vega through Amarillo, Pampa, and up toward Canadian. The main concerns are frequent lightning, downpours, and gusty winds. While widespread severe weather is not expected, forecasters said isolated wind gusts could reach 60 mph.
Drivers along I-40 from Vega through Amarillo to Wheeler should prepare for reduced visibility and slick pavement. Local officials warn water may quickly cover roads in low-lying areas, especially around Amarillo and Borger, making flash flooding possible.
Residents are urged to monitor alerts, avoid flooded streets, and have multiple ways to receive warnings if conditions worsen. Lightning could also disrupt outdoor activities in Pampa, Dumas, and surrounding towns.
The thunderstorm threat is expected to diminish by 3 p.m., but additional rounds of storms are possible later this week. Weather officials said more advisories could be issued if conditions intensify.
