Dodge City, KS – Residents across central and southwestern Kansas should prepare for the possibility of severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Dodge City.

Forecasters said Sunday that storms may develop between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m., with the strongest risk along Route 96 and Interstate 70 corridors. The NWS noted that the overall storm severity will depend on how much cloud cover clears out during the day.

According to the NWS, threats include damaging winds of at least 60 miles per hour, hail larger than one inch in diameter, and a very small chance of a brief tornado. Areas near Hays and surrounding counties have been outlined as having the greatest risk for isolated severe storms.

The Storm Prediction Center categorized the region under a “Marginal Risk,” or Level 1 of 5 on its scale. While not widespread, forecasters emphasized that any storm that develops could quickly turn severe.

Motorists and residents are advised to monitor weather alerts closely through the evening, especially those traveling along highways in central Kansas.
