Richmond, VA – A winter storm is bringing accumulating snow and slippery roads across central, south-central, and interior southeast Virginia today, creating hazardous travel conditions from mid-morning through the evening commute.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) Wakefield, Winter Storm Warnings remain in effect until 6 p.m. Monday for a broad area stretching from Prince Edward, Lunenburg, Nottoway, Powhatan, Amelia, and Cumberland counties east toward Richmond, Chesterfield, Henrico, Prince George, New Kent, and Charles City. A second warning covers portions of interior southeast Virginia, including Greensville, Sussex, Surry, Southampton, Isle of Wight, James City, York County, and the City of Newport News.

Forecasters expect 2 to 5 inches of snow in the central and south-central counties, with 2 to 4 inches more likely in interior southeast Virginia. Rain is transitioning to snow through the afternoon, with heavier bursts capable of creating rapid deterioration in road conditions.

The NWS warns that even modest accumulations may lead to slippery bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads. Hazardous travel is likely during the Monday evening commute, particularly around the Richmond metro area, Petersburg, Hopewell, and the Route 460 and I-95 corridors.

Drivers are urged to delay nonessential travel and exercise extreme caution if they must be on the road. Officials recommend slowing down, increasing following distance, and preparing vehicles with emergency supplies, including food, water, and a flashlight.

Snow is expected to taper late this afternoon and early evening, though lingering slick spots may continue into the early nighttime hours as temperatures fall.
