Charleston, S.C. – Streets in Charleston and North Charleston are flooding Saturday afternoon as intense thunderstorms sweep across southeastern South Carolina, triggering Flash Flood Warnings across multiple counties.
According to the National Weather Service offices in Columbia and Charleston, radar estimates show 1 to 3 inches of rain already falling in parts of Aiken, Barnwell, and Charleston counties, with another 1 to 3 inches possible through mid-afternoon. Officials warn that flash flooding is either underway or imminent, particularly in low-lying areas and along major roadways.
In central South Carolina, flooding is impacting Aiken and Barnwell counties, including stretches of Interstate 20 and I-520. Heavy water on roadways has been reported near Graniteville, New Ellenton, and Barnwell, while neighborhoods around Clearwater and Belvedere are seeing poor drainage issues.
In the Lowcountry, drivers in Mount Pleasant, Downtown Charleston, Daniel Island, and West Ashley are urged to avoid flooded intersections. Johns Island and Sullivan’s Island are also at risk as storms continue to stall over the region.
Residents are urged to stay off roads, move to higher ground if water approaches, and never drive around barricades. Warnings remain in effect until at least 3:15 p.m., and additional advisories may be issued if storms persist.
