Columbia, S.C. – Unseasonably cool air is set to blanket central South Carolina Sunday, keeping afternoon highs near or just under 80 degrees for much of the region, with persistent clouds and periods of light rain expected. According to the National Weather Service in Columbia, showers and drizzle will be most common in the Central Savannah River Area, including Aiken, Edgefield, and Barnwell counties, as scattered light rain chances last through the day.
Communities such as Waynesboro, Augusta, and Lexington will see highs in the upper 70s to low 80s, but the gray skies and damp air may make it feel cooler throughout the day. Rain chances climb to near 70% in some western counties, making for slick roads and reduced visibility at times. Residents are advised to keep rain gear handy, use headlights during any downpours, and give themselves extra time on the roads. Local agencies remind drivers to be alert for sudden patches of ponding on area highways, especially near low-lying stretches along I-20 and U.S. 1.
While the rain should stay on the lighter side, pockets of heavier showers can’t be ruled out, mainly west of Columbia through Sunday evening. Keep electronic devices charged in case of brief, isolated power flickers. The cooler, unsettled pattern lingers into early next week, with additional showers possible Monday before gradual clearing.
Another update will be issued if more advisories are needed, but as of now, Sunday’s threat is limited to wet roads and a persistent autumn-like chill.
