Harrisburg, Pa. – Flash flooding could turn dangerous across central Pennsylvania this evening as thunderstorms dump up to 5 inches of rain in just a few hours.

According to the National Weather Service in State College, a Flood Watch remains in effect for 31 counties from Elk to Lancaster until 10 p.m. Wednesday, with a second wave of potential flooding continuing until midnight in eastern counties. Thunderstorms are expected to bring intense rainfall rates of 2 inches per hour, rapidly overwhelming storm drains and waterways.

The watch includes major population centers like Harrisburg, State College, Altoona, York, Lancaster, and Williamsport, as well as smaller towns like Emporium, Mifflintown, and Clearfield. Roads, especially in low-lying or urban areas, could become impassable within minutes of heavy downpours.

Drivers are urged to avoid water-covered roads and never attempt to cross flooded areas, even if they appear shallow. Power outages and delays to evening commutes are possible. Residents should charge devices, monitor alerts, and prepare for quick evacuation if needed.

Rain is expected to taper off late tonight, but additional flood warnings may be issued if new storms develop.
