STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – A widespread hard freeze will settle over much of central Pennsylvania overnight tonight, from 11PM until 9AM Friday, bringing the coldest air of the season and likely ending the region’s growing season.
According to the National Weather Service in State College, a Freeze Warning remains in effect for a broad area including Altoona, Williamsport, Johnstown, State College, Gettysburg, and Chambersburg. Temperatures are expected to bottom out between 25 and 30 degrees, with several hours of sub-freezing air expected before sunrise.
Forecasters warn that frost and freeze conditions could kill crops, damage sensitive plants, and possibly harm unprotected plumbing. Residents are urged to cover or bring in plants, drain hoses and irrigation lines, and wrap exterior pipes to prevent bursting. Pet owners and farmers should ensure animals have access to insulated shelter and fresh, unfrozen water.
Calm winds and clear skies will allow rapid cooling after sunset, leading to widespread frost formation. Drivers along I-80, I-99, and U.S. 322 should prepare for frosted windshields and slick rural roads before dawn Friday.
According to meteorologists, this will be the first regionwide freeze of the fall season across central Pennsylvania. Temperatures will rebound into the 50s and 60s this weekend, though another cold push may bring renewed frost potential early next week.
