STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Damp leaves cling to driveways and faint fog drifts across low valleys this morning as a gray sky holds steady over central Pennsylvania. It’s the calm before another soaking stretch — one that could drop more than an inch of rain before Halloween, with gusty winds sweeping in by Friday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in State College, clouds will thicken through the day before a steady rain develops late, likely lasting into Thursday night. Embedded thunderstorms are possible, mainly east of I-99 and along U.S. 322, where brief downpours and gusts up to 25 mph could make driving tricky. Creeks and small streams may see quick rises, though widespread flooding is not expected.

By Friday, drier air filters in behind the departing low. Breezy west winds will usher in cooler air, keeping highs near 50°F during the day. Trick-or-treat conditions look dry but brisk — ideal for layered costumes and light gloves after sunset as temperatures fall through the 40s. Roads should remain dry for evening events, though damp leaves may still make some sidewalks slick.

The first weekend of November brings calmer, partly sunny skies and highs in the low 50s. Saturday and Sunday both appear dry, giving residents a solid window for outdoor cleanup before colder nights return next week.

Clocks “fall back” early Sunday morning, trimming daylight further — and with it, the unmistakable feeling that winter isn’t far off. A chilly November lies ahead.
